River Spirit, 2022. This puppet, made to participate in the Oregon Hill Halloween Parade represents urban and natural resilience to ecological change in the form of riparian buffers. Riparian buffers filter pollutants, absorb excess nutrients and help mitigate floodwaters, meaning they are an essential component of our well-being and resilience to climate change. Made of cardboard, newspaper, staples, and paper mache, the structure personifies a river and features a repeating radial print which includes Richmond, VA native riparian vegetation including willow, river birch, sneezeweed, ground nut, bindweed, and more.
